What are Splats? Probably just what you think of when you see that word, but with a funny and very creative twist by Simon Crack, author of the enjoyable children’s book, Splats. When you think “splat” you might picture, heaven forbid, a bird splatting on you as it flies overhead. Or you might envision a small bucket of paint thrown at a wall. When either happens, you end up with a splat that drips and dries into unusual shapes. But what Simon Crack does with a dried splat is add a few lines, squiggles, eyes, nose, ears, or whatever to a brightly colored splat and hey, presto…creatures like splarks, splooges, splogs and more now tickle our imaginations and make us smile regardless of age. What a wonderful bit of fun, especially for children.

I found myself really enjoying looking at the shapes in Splats. Occasionally, I even covered up the names and descriptions supplied by the author to see if what I thought of when I looked at a bright orange, green or purple splat matched what Simon decided it was. Imagine doing the same with your youngster: there’s no limit to what young minds would “see” when they looked at a splat! To let youngsters do just that, Simon Crack has left a couple of unidentified splats at the end of the book. What will your youngster decide they are? What squiggles will they add to their splat?
